PEÑALOSA’S WIFE MAD NOT SAD

By Ronnie Nathanielsz, PhilBoxing.com, 20 Mar 2007
Goody Peñalosa Former WBC super flyweight champion Gerry Peñalosa’s charming wife Goody isn’t sad over her husband’s loss to WBO super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon. But like she said “she’s mad not sad.” Peñalosa believes he won the fight and even those who contend he lost a close fight continue to praise his gallant showing and blast the judges once again for their ridiculously lopsided scoring.

PACQUIAO MAY BE SIDELINED

By Ronnie Nathanielsz, PhilBoxing.com, 20 Mar 2007
With the statement of Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer that the pre-eminent pay-per-view network HBO had set aside a September 16 date for a possible rematch between newly crowned super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and legendary Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera from whom he won the title, it seems Manny Pacquiao may be sidelined. Pacquiao’s decision to turn his back and ignore a seven-fight contract he signed with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions in m

INSIDE SPORTS: PACQUIAO LOST A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

By Ronnie Nathanielsz, PhilBoxing.com, 20 Mar 2007
Its about time Manny Pacquiao and the sycophants around him including a miscellaneous Canadian who lives off him like a leech and his lawyer Franklin "Jing" Gacal admit that signing up with Bob Arum’s Top Rank was a monumental blunder. Of course we know the mentality behind the decision to grab the $1 million bonus from Arum which was twice that offered by Golden Boy because the initial glitter blinded them. To hell with the fact that Pacquiao – with the obvious assistance and ad

IS GOLDEN BOY COOKING UP SOMETHING?

By Anthony 'Duljoman' Andales, PhilBoxing.com, 20 Mar 2007
Las Vegas--After the post fight interviews at the Media Center of Mandalay Bay, I caught up with Sugar Shane Mosley. He was very accomodating and smile was always there. Unlike The Executioner, Mosley stayed and talked to media people. Hopkins ran after the post fight interview, like he really ran with his bodyguards, it seems like he's in a hurry or he just don't like to hang around anymore. I asked Mosley who he wants to see next for Marquez, he told me that he'd like to see a Barrera remat

SHOULD “SUSPENDED” REF LAURENCE COLE WORK? HBO BRASS OFFER “LAME” RESPONSE

By Pedro Fernandez, RingTalk.com, 20 Mar 2007
FANS NEED ANSWER POLL AT END OF ARTICLE San Francisco, CA- When “Ring Talk” wrote the executives at HBO, mainly Sports VP Kery Davis, as well as Sports CEO Ross Greenburg, we asked them one question? “Why would you use a referee (Laurence Cole) that is suspended or banned here in the United States on an HBO broadcast from Denmark? Here is Mr. Greenburg’s lame response (and I told him so) for the 20 million Americans or more that are HBO viewers. “WE (HBO) ARE

A fair shake is all we ask

By Ed Picson, The Manila Bulletin, 20 Mar 2007
JUST A week and a half ago, we registered in this column (The Scene Around, March 9) our agreement with Gerry Peñalosa’s assessment that he could take WBO Super Bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce de Leon (DPL) in their title fight in Las Vegas last weekend. Obviously we can’t very well claim "I told you so", because de Leon was adjudged the winner by unanimous decision. But Gerry proved most boxing pundits wrong with the classy performance he put up Saturday night (Las Vegas ti

I've nothing to lose, says Pacman foe

By Nick Giongco, The Manila Bulletin, 20 Mar 2007
JORGE SOLIS plans to give Manny Pacquiao a dose of his own medicine when they slug it out next month at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. "It was at the Alamodome where Pacquiao beat Barrera and I am going to do to Pacquiao what he did to Barrera in 2003," Solis said as quoted by Top Rank publicist Ricardo Jimenez yesterday from Los Angeles. Solis said Pacquiao was still a nobody when he fought Barrera and he intends to do the same. That win opened the window of opportunities for Pa

BARELY three weeks into his fight, Manny Pacquiao finally arrived at the Wild Card Gym for the final stage of his preparation for undefeated Mexican challenger Jorge Ivan “Coloradito” Solis on April 14 at the Aladome in San Antonio, Texas. Pacquiao arrived at Los Angeles last Sunday and was greeted by an estimated 600 strong supporters upon his arrival at the LA airport. Observers believe that Pacquiao is in tip-top shape and can easily dispose of the taller and hungrier Soli

Another crack for Gerry?

By Joaquin Henson, The Philippine Star, 20 Mar 2007
Gerry Peñalosa said yesterday Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez has offered to arrange a fight against WBO bantamweight titlist Jhonny Gonzalez but he would rather face WBO superbantamweight champion Daniel Ponce de Leon in a rematch to prove a point. Peñalosa fought courageously in a bold bid to dethrone De Leon in Las Vegas last Saturday. He moved up two weight classes for a crack at the crown. The judges, however, gave the Filipino southpaw little credit in surviving the 12-

Marquez Madness

By Steve Kim, MaxBoxing.com, 20 Mar 2007
Move over Joe and Dom DiMaggio. Step aside Bruce and Clay Mathews. The Wayans clan, all of you, step back. The Baldwins, you too. And make way for Juan Manuel and Rafael Marquez, the most prolific set of siblings you'll ever see perform. That claim would be cemented with Juan Manuel's clear-cut victory over Marco Antonio Barrera last Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. It's been established for a while

Marquez wants Pacquiao

Inquirer News Service, 20 Mar 2007
MANILA, Philippines -- having settled the business at hand, Juan Manuel Marquez can now train his sights at the direction of one of the world’s best pound-for-pound fighters today: Manny Pacquiao. Marquez again flaunted his superior technical skills in gutting out a unanimous decision triumph over fellow Mexican ring legend Marco Antonio Barrera in Las Vegas, setting him up for a rematch that could very well define his career. And with the World Boxing Council super featherweight bel

Beaten Barrera blames ref, judges

By Jeff Haney, Las Vegas Sun, 20 Mar 2007
Marco Antonio Barrera and his camp are right in one respect. Saturday night's super featherweight title fight, which challenger Juan Manuel Marquez won by 12-round unanimous decision, was compelling enough to warrant a rematch. Barrera's wrong about something else. The three-time world champion's griping notwithstanding, Marquez deserved to emerge as a clear winner on the judges' scorecards in the W

Marquez Has The Last Laugh

By Kieran Mulvaney, TigerBoxing.com, 20 Mar 2007
In the end, Juan Manuel Marquez had the last laugh. Oh, how we mocked him—all of us—when he spurned $750,000 for a rematch with Manny Pacquiao. There, finally, was his opportunity for big money and a big fight. Now, at last, he could emerge from the shadows of compatriots Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales, and become a leading player on boxing’s main stage. Instead, he turned it down, walked away from the negotiating table and his long-time promoters, Top Rank, and

It's time Barrera bows out

By Norm Frauenheim, AZCentral.com, 20 Mar 2007
Marco Antonio Barrera's young daughter, Jimena, yawned and waited for her daddy to step through the ropes and into his office Saturday night. It was after her bedtime. Barrera lost, but she could sleep easily, knowing that Dad has forever won a spot among Mexico's loyal fans. An appreciation of his resiliency and skill over nearly two decades was evident even in the opposite corner at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. When he was introduced before the opening fury, cornermen for Juan Manuel Marq

Jaca is GAB Boxer of the Month

By Salven L. Lagumbay, PhilBoxing.com, 19 Mar 2007
Jimrex 'The Executioner' Jaca of the Wakee Salud Stable, the newly-crowned WBO Asia-Pacific super-featherweight champ, has been chosen by the Games and Amusements Board as its Boxer of the Month in its latest ratings. Jaca was chosen owing to his seventh-round demolition of Indonesia's Simson Butar-Butar, a victory that would possibly line the Filipino for yet another big fight in the United States. Undefeated Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista was runner-up with his third-round knockout victory o

'BOOM BOOM': LET PONCE DE LEON WAIT FOR ME

By Dong Secuya, PhilBoxing.com, 19 Mar 2007
"Let him wait for me. I'll face him after I'll take care of Sergio Medina on May 5," thus declared Filipino rising star Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista after watching on TV WBO superbantam champ Daniel Ponce de Leon won a highly unpopular decision against Filipino former world champion Gerry Peñalosa at yesterday's boxing event at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, NV. The 20-year-old Bautista (22-0 17KOs) is the number one contender to

Peñalosa did the Filipino proud

By Recah Trinidad, Inquirer News Service, 19 Mar 2007
MANILA, Philippines -- It was, honestly speaking, a close fight. But, based on the final scores submitted by the three judges, the bout was a horrible mismatch. A plain review of the one-sided scoring would also show that Gerry Peñalosa managed to win only a single round in his world super bantamweight challenge against Mexican Daniel Ponce de Leon in Las Vegas Sunday. That is a big, fat lie. Peñalosa surpassed himself and came close enough to scoring an upset. * * * OK, Peñalo
